Condolences for the loss of Konrad Steffen

Updated: Nov 4, 2020

APECS Switzerland would like to express our deepest sorrow for the tragic loss of Konrad Steffen (known as “Koni” by his family, friends and co-workers). He died on the 8th of August 2020, in an accident while on a scientific expedition in the ice sheet of Greenland. Koni was a pioneer glaciologist in Arctic research (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konrad_Steffen). He founded the Swiss Camp and was fully devoted to the investigations in the site, leading yearly expeditions throughout his career. He was committed to promoting science and raising awareness among politicians and the general public about climate change impacts in the cryosphere. He was involved in multiple polar and alpine research’s associations, including the Swiss Committee on Polar and High Altitude Research (SKPH), the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC), the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the Swiss Polar Institute (SPI). He was a mentor to many members of APECS Switzerland and always supported us. Koni’s death was not only that of an exceptional scientist, but of a kind person, who would always provide support where needed. He transmitted the passion for his work and always motivated young researchers in pursuing their research. Our condolences go with the family and closest friends. Koni will remain in the legacy of his work in the scientific community and the memories of the ones that had the opportunity to know and work with him.
